"We live in the completely independent world, which simply means we cannot escape each other. How we respond to AIDS depends, in part, on whether we understand this interependence. It is not someone else's problem. This is everybody's problem."

Parliament bans use of 'tweaa' in House

  • The Speaker of Parliament, Mr Edward Doe Adjaho
The Speaker of Parliament, Mr Edward Doe Adjaho, has banned the use of the Akan word 'tweaa' in Parliament.

He said the use of the Akan word tweaa was un-parliamentary and should not be part of the “Parliamentary lexicon.”

Mr Adjaho banned the word after the member for Subin, Mr Isaac Osei (NPP), had drawn his attention to the fact that the word had gained currency in the House lately and sought to find out if that word could be used.

Tweaa is an Akan interjection used mainly to express contempt for a statement made.

Its use has gained currency since the District Chief Executive for Ahafo Ano South, Mr Gabriel Barima, flared up when a member of an audience he was addressing at Mankraso in the Ashanti Region used it to express contempt for a statement he had made.

The enraged DCE stormed out of the meeting after stating, among other things, that the person who made the statement was not his “co-equal.”

For the past three weeks, some Members of Parliament have used the word against their colleagues making statements or contributions to statements on the floor of the House.

The use of the word usually leads to laughter and takes the focus off the issues being discussed for some minutes.

  • Drama unfolded at an Accra circuit court Monday when a man convicted of dealing in narcotic drugs told the court after his conviction that he believed in the usefulness of Indian hemp.
His comments sent the courtroom into uncontrollable laughter.
“I have used Indian hemp for the past 11 years and it has made me potent in bed. l wish my wife were here to testify to that,” Barima Odei Ampadu said.
According to him, Indian hemp does not cause madness, but rather cures asthma and cough.
“My wife has also been smoking Indian hemp and using it for cooking,” he added.
Ampadu, who was full of confidence, told the court that just as other herbs were used for medicinal purposes, so was Indian hemp. He said he started smoking Indian hemp 11 years ago but had traded in narcotics for the past 10 years.
He also told the court that the proceeds from his trade were what he used to cater for his wife and children, as well as his mother. Ampadu said he made between GH¢100 and GH¢120 a day from the sale of Indian hemp.
He said he sold each roll of Indian hemp for 50 pesewas but when the price of fuel was increased, he also increased the price to GH¢1.00. Ampadu also told the court that he paid his workers who assisted him in his business.
He said he had never taken alcohol in his life and that Indian hemp had helped him a lot. He said, for instance, that when the leaves of Indian hemp were grinded and mixed with shea butter, the mixture promoted the growth of hair.
Ampadu said anytime the police arrested him, he paid them and they released him. He said the dress that he wore was customised for him with the design of leaves of Indian hemp.
After listening to the convict for about one hour, the court, presided over by Mr Francis Obiri, handed him a five-year jail sentence.

  • Knowing very well how impossible it will be for the cedi to pass the dollar and also seeing how slim her chances of ever holding a Grammy is, singer Efya,  has come out to deny ever saying she was waiting to win the holy grail in World Music before saying 'I do'.
In a recent interview on 'GH and Beyond', over the weekend, Efya set the records straight on what she actually said and how her exact words have been taken out of context.
“I didn’t say I was not going to get married till I win a Grammy. I know that’s how it seemed like but this is what I said :‘I said I’m not ready to get married yet and then in between the time if I win a Grammy, I would be grateful,” she said.
“I believe in love and I love love and I love the people that I love and because of that maybe they love me back and might want to take me personal but I did not say if I do not win a Grammy, I won’t get married.”
“I just said that I will like to win a Grammy during this time when I’m not so engulfed about the whole fantasy of getting married like some young women do at my age.”
The four time GMA Best Female Vocalist winner also spoke of how her music has evolved over the years.
“My music has evolved. I can’t say that it hasn’t because I can feel it and my fans also feel it. And the people that I work with feel it. My producers also realize that I’m not making the same kind of music that I used to make before and that is also very good for an artiste because it shows your level of development at certain point and I love it.”
Efya’s debut album 'Love Genes' is set for release later this year.

Mahama can’t fix economy... These are signs of the end times - Collins Dauda

  • The Minister of Water Resources Works and Housing, Alhaji Collins Dauda, speaking at Obuasi at the weekend during the 10th anniversary celebration of the enskinment of Adansi Sarki Zongo, Alhaji Gibrine Ibrahim, argued that there was little the President could do to address the situation, since both the Qur'an and the Bible have predicted hard condition at the End Time.
“The truth is that, Ghana is not destroyed. And one cannot blame the President for the hardship in the country because both the Bible and the Qur'an have predicted that at the end time, there will be hardship and we are faced with it,” he noted.
The Water Resources,Works and Housing minister regretted that politicians who were part of successive governments that failed to fully satisfy Ghanaians have also joined the chorus that times are difficult, and urged the enthusiastic crowd to ignore such people.
He noted that despite all the difficulties facing the country, a lot had also been achieved in terms of development.
According to Collins Dauda, in the past it was difficult for one to place a call to his or her village or town, but that is not the situation today, due to availability of telephone facilities.
The Minister’s comment follows of Ghanaians, including the Methodist Bishop of Obuasi-Diocese, Rt. Rev. Stephen Bosomtwe Ayensu, about the high cost of living, as a result of the poor management of the economy and certain decisions taken by the government.
The Methodist Bishop even went to the extent of describing the NDC administration as insensitive and dull in its approach to resolving the current economic hardship the country is experiencing.
The cedi has drastically fallen in value against the dollar and other major international currencies, compelling the Bank of Ghana to announce aimed at shoring up the Cedi. The Bank has also injected US$20 million into critical sectors of the economy.
Archbishop Nicolas Duncan Williams, the Presiding Bishop and General Overseer of the Christian Action Faith Ministries (CAFM) had led his congregation to pray for the recovery of the cedis.
“I hold up the cedi with prayer and I command the cedi to recover and I declare the cedi will not fall, it will not fall any further. I command the cedi to climb.
I commend the resurrection of the cedi. I command and released a miracle for the economy,” he prayed.
Present at the function were Hon. John Alexander Ackon, deputy Minister for Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs, Mr. Eric Opoku, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr. Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, the Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive and Dr. Alhaji Nuhu Shaributu, the national Chief Imam.

  • A 30-year-old woman (name withheld) who was born without a vagina is getting help from doctors and some Ghanaian philanthropist so she could go for surgery and get a vagina. The distressed lady told Adom News amidst tears that for 30 years she only had a small hole at her private part through which she urinates, but the place is completely sealed from birth.
She said she only realized at age 12 that she did not have a normal vagina like other girls around her but she had not been bold to come out and say it until now. “I have a craving for sexual intercourse but the place cannot be penetrated so even though men have come into my life I have not be able to be very intimate with any of them,” he lamented. “I have attempted to commit suicide on several occasions but my friends reassure me that it will be well,” she said.
The woman said her greatest desire now is to be able to fulfill her longing for sexual intercourse and also be able to give birth. “I want to know how it feels like to have sex and to be pregnant and have a baby,” she said. Since she told her story, a kind Gynaecologist, Dr. Ofori Boadu of the Ashanti Regional Hospital offered to do the surgery for her for free.
The doctor said the initial test reveal the woman has a history of primary amenorrhea, adding that an ultrasound tests also revealed absence of the uterus. He said there is a need to do an MRI of the pelvis and abdomen to determine what is possible for the woman. Dr. Boadu told Adom News creating a vagina for the woman to be able to have sex is possible, but he is yet to be determine if she can conceive and give birth. He also noted that the test showed the lady has more male hormones than female hormones, but the deformity can be corrected. Dr. Boadu said he needs only GH₵ 5000 to do additional tests and the surgery itself. Meanwhile the Dormaa Government Hospital has offered to bear half of the cost, while one Ata Dabone and family also of Dormaa have offered to pay the other half.

'Samini is a liar' - Another twist to the tale of two musicians

    By: Anonymous On: 4:16 pm
  • Share The Gag

  • The Rivalry between dance-hall musicians Samini and Shatta Wale has taken an interesting twist even as the two get ready to go on a live programme on UTV for a ‘tell-it-all’ debate that would also be broadcast live on Peace FM.
Samini first threw the challenge to Shatta for them to go on national television and engage in a debate to enable the general public know the whole truth about the disagreement between them, and Shatta accepted.
Samini called for the debate when he spoke to Akwasi Aboagye on Peace FM’s Entertainment Review last Saturday and alleged that in the past the Chief Executive of Bullhaus Entertainment, Bull Dog came to him and asked for permission to go beat up Shatta Wale.
“His manager, Bull Dog, years back would meet back stage and tell me that he wants to beat that guy (Shatta Wale) for me because the guy was fooling and he (Bull Dog) only wants clearance from me to beat him up. Today, Bull Dog is behaving as if he has a fight with me because he manages Shatta. But Bull Dog knows he used to come to my shows, remove his shirts, breathing profusely, jumping up and down and sweating all over. You Bull Dog, today, because you oppose me, you sit on TV to say my brand is not marketable,” Samini revealed.
Incidentally, Bull Dog is Shatta’s manager and he has taken a strong exception to the allegation from Samini, describing it as blatant untruth.
“Samini is a liar, I have never ever told him that I wanted to beat up Shatta Wale for him. Rather I spoke to Shatta Wale in the past to stop insulting Samini during his performances.
I even added jokingly that (Shatta Wale) was doing fine without Samini so he should concentrate on his career and forget about Samini. I remember playfully telling Shatta some three years ago that if he doesn’t put a stop to that behaviour, I will give him a few punches. I’m not at Samini’s camp and I don’t manage him so what will I gain if I had told him that?” Bull Dog noted in an exclusive interview with News-One.
He continue: “All these things are lies; I don’t take off any shirt in public. I love Dancehall, I respect Samini and I enjoy his music but I’m not a fanatic like that. He told a series of lies on that day. I just want people to be truthful and honest in their submissions.”
Many people have raised several concerns about what seems to be bad blood between Samini’s group and Shatta’s camp.
News-One has gathered that arrangements are underway for the debate to be organized in the studios of Peace FM, as well as on UTV.

  • Remains of the Ghanaian BBC journalist, Komla Afeke Dumor, arrived Ghana yesterday evening, as clearance has been sought for the body to be flown into the country.

Komla died in London two weeks ago, of cardiac arrest at age 41.

A memorial service was held for him by his colleagues at the BBC at London’s St Martin-in-the-field Church, Trafalgar Square on Saturday.

Josephine Hazeley, deputy editor of the BBC Africa Service, paid tribute to a man “who represented all that is good in Africa”. It was attended by family, friends and colleagues of the late Komla Dumor. Leading the service, Reverend Richard Carter said Komla Dumor was not only a shining light but the light.

Among those who read tributes during the service were colleagues and friends including Herbert Mensah, who said Komla Dumor has become a dream for Africa’s youth to aspire to.

Komla’s widow, Kwansema, and his 11-year-old daughter also read tributes in honour of their husband and father.

Ghana’s First Lady Lordina Mahama has attended a similar memorial programme held in honour of the late Komla Dumor.

It was organized by the Ghana Embassy and the Ghanaian community in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

In a solemn gathering, dignitaries such as former President John Agyekum Kufuor, the UN and AU Special Envoy for Darfur, Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambas, Foreign Minister Hanna Tetteh, some Ghanaian Ministers of state, friends of Komla Dumor and members of the community, paid tributes in memory of the late BBC journalist and host of Focus on Africa.

They praised Komla’s ability to stand up to all competently and professionally, and the passionate manner in which he told Africa’s story the African way.

Former President Kufuor said he arrived in London the day Komla Dumor passed away.

He noted that though Komla became a ‘big’ icon promoting the welfare of Africa everywhere he went, he was still humble, diligent, and acquitted himself well in his choice of profession.

He called on all to emulate Komla’s lifestyle.

Dr Ibn Chambas acknowledged that Komla’s death rekindled global mourning and celebration of a great young man who dared to bring out the best in Africa.

He said lessons from his courteous mannerism, courage, and competence should not be buried with him, adding that Komla fulfilled his mission on earth.

The President of the Ghanaian community in Addis Ababa, Aida Opoku-Mensah, fondly referred to Komla as Ghana’s Global Brand (GGB).

Former Deputy Minister of Communications, Victoria Hammah Keeps Crying…

    By: Anonymous On: 2:07 pm
  • Share The Gag

  • It Appears former Deputy Minister of Communications, Victoria Hammah, has shown remorse over her action as she has been engaged in uncontrollable weeping ever since her leaked gossip tape ..."saying she would not quit the government work until she hits a $1m dollar bill - this resulted to her being fired by the president of Ghana John Mahama. The tape has been christened ‘Vikileaks’, emerged.

Chiefs from her hometown, Kintampo in the Brong Ahafo Region, yesterday confirmed to Daily Guide that they had found it very difficult to talk to the former minister because anytime they tried to speak to her she would break into uncontrollable weeping.
The Kintampo Kyeremankomahene, Nana Guakro Effah, who is also Nkoranzahene’s Kronkonhene, has therefore appealed to President John Mahama to reconsider the outright dismissal slapped on the former deputy minister and reinstate her to her former post.
Sources told Daily Guide that the embattled former minister had just been introduced to the chiefs of the area by the First Lady, Lordina Mahama as the next NDC parliamentary candidate and that she should be accepted when she comes around, thus leaving the turbulent Ablekuma West seat to Ursula Owusu.
This occurred when Mrs Mahama travelled to the area with Vicky only to return to face the gargantuan embarrassment.
With the new development, Ms Hammah’s political career has taken a nose-dive.
Nana Guakro Effah described the sanction meted out to their royal as very harsh since the allegations were not properly investigated before the President took the decision to dismiss her.
The Kyeremankomahene has also appealed to the President to institute a committee to look into the leaked tape in order to give opportunity to the sacked deputy minister to clear herself. This, he said, would help establish the veracity or otherwise of the claims on the said tape.

He disclosed that chiefs from the area were planning to meet with President Mahama to put their concerns to him to ensure the reinstatement of Ms Victoria Hammah as the government looked into the matter.
The leaked tape contained several allegations including a claim that the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur, played a role in the election petition which saw President John Mahama being maintained as the validly elected President in the 2012 presidential election.
Ms. Hammah was sacked barely 24 hours last Friday by the President, after the tape went viral, without being officially communicated to. She only checked her email and found a correspondence relieving her of her appointment.
On the said tape, Ms. Hammah was heard telling someone believed to be her aunt that she wanted to make not less than $1million before quitting politics.
Until then, the sacked deputy minister said she would play her game safe without having issues with any of her superiors in order to achieve her ambition, since “if you have money then you can control people.”
The 32-minute recording of the two ladies contained inside information about the workings of government and the role Nana Oye Lithur played in securing a favourable judgement for the NDC in the election petition.
Meanwhile, the largest opposition party, the NPP, whose leaders went to the Supreme Court to challenge the 2012 election results, is asking the Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Wood, to probe the judgement which dismissed the petition.
Other civil society organisations have also joined the fray calling on the CJ to launch full-scale independent investigations into the revelations made on the leaked tape to save the image of the Judiciary, especially the justices of the apex court of the land.
